Given a program of adjectives that included warm, spare, comfortable, spacious, spa-like, nature, big, expansive, non-urban, white-walled and inspired by Parrot Cay, Big Sur, Amangiri, Nakashima and Hans Wegner, we were asked to design a two-building complex with an outdoor kitchen and pool on the oceanfront of Long Island.

The main house is a private one-bedroom retreat rethought for the owners, a successful design couple. The adjacent lot, reached by a meandering path through the sand, has a four bedroom guesthouse with movies, a bar and the outdoor kitchen, sun tanning decks and pool.

The entire assembly is composed of cedar, ipe and teak with paper lanterns, linen and cotton.

The overall effect is to be enchanted by the ocean and enveloped in privacy.
