HOUSE ON LONG ISLAND
Non-Urban Nature Retreat
Given a program of adjectives that included warm, spare, comfortable, spacious, spa-like, big, expansive, non-urban, white-walled, and inspired by Parrot Cay, Big Sur, Amangiri, Nakashima, and Hans Wegner, we were asked to design a two-building complex with an outdoor kitchen and pool on the oceanfront of Long Island.
The existing main house is a private one-bedroom retreat rethought for the Owners, a successful fashion design couple. The adjacent lot, reached by a meandering path through the sand, has a new four-bedroom guesthouse with movies, a bar and the outdoor kitchen, sun tanning decks and swimming pool.
The entire assembly is composed of cedar, ipe and teak with paper lanterns, linen, and cotton.
The overall effect is to be enchanted by the ocean and enveloped in privacy.
