MOTT STREET ESCAPE
Residential Renovation
For a Brazilian businesswoman, we created a two-bedroom pied-à-terre from a one-bedroom loft-like apartment in a historic building in NoLita. The space had exposed brick walls and a heavy timber girder supported by timber columns both of which became integral parts of the new design scheme.
By rearranging the existing plan, we were able to enlarge the primary bedroom to include new built-in closets and a study with plenty of natural light and to create a second bedroom for visits from the client’s college-age children, as well as visiting friends. Removing the existing large island makes the living room feel expansive and provided enough space for a large dining table. We removed the worn, non-historic, existing flooring and replaced it with new European Oak throughout, reworked the bathrooms with new fixtures and brilliant tiles over radiant heat, created custom cabinetry and doors and furnished the apartment with pieces that complemented the client’s exceptional taste.
