STUDIO 54
Iconic New York Club
Studio 54. The ultimate, the original discotheque opened its doors on April 26th, 1977. Housed in a former Opera House, the nightclub took advantage of the bones of this historic structure with a grand promenade and a three and a half story high main space.
The flyspace was put to use for first-of-its-kind lighting and sound distribution. The theater seats were removed and replaced with pillows and bolsters. When Scott went to see the space, he immediately had a vision that captured the pulse of the time, “Everyone wants to be on the stage so let’s make the stage the dance floor.” Mylar covered banquets and Astroturf covered risers flanked the dance floor. The large circular bar at the end of a long entrance became a hub that the crowd revolved around.
The club sparked immediate worldwide attention and became a celebrity magnet. Cher made an appearance in suspenders and a straw hat, Calvin Klein, Andy Warhol, were all photographed for the cover of the New York Post.
